Creating a sustainable school environment underpins all that we do at Aberfoyle Hub R-7 School. We are moving down the path to improving our environmental practices and reducing our impact on the planet. To support this Aberfoyle Hub has developed a SEMP (School Environmental Management Plan) endorsed by all staff and the Governing Council.

Aberfoyle Hub is a member of the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative. The school has student representatives who attend The Field River (our local catchment) Environmental Forum and a student representative on the State Youth Environment Council. The students have an environmental voice through class meetings and through recommendations made by the Student Representative Council.

On the practical side we are;

  • Reducing our water usage by having waterless urinals in all male toilets
  • Using dual flush cisterns across the school
  • Collecting and recycling much of our paper and cardboard waste as well as collecting recyclable drink containers
  • We monitor our local creek environment by testing water quality on Thalassa Creek
  • We have 9.0kw of solar panels on the roof to supplement our electricity use

Our environment centre allows classes to be involved in;

  • Learning about sustainable gardening practices
  • Collecting and composting food scraps
  • Raising and planting vegetables in the school vegetable garden
  • Propagating seedlings for sale and planting

In 2012 we were selected by the Natural Resources Management Board to work closely with their education officers to further enhance our environmental practices. With their assistance we are developing closer links with the local community by the establishment of a shared gardening project on the school grounds.

The recycling programme also includes can and drink containers.
The money raised from this project goes toward environmental projects throughout the school.

Teachers and students are encouraged to 'Reduce our carbon footprint!' by following these suggestions:-

In our classrooms we can;

  • Turn lights off at recess, lunch times and when out of room (Spanish, Music, Hall, MPR)
  • Turn computer screens off at recess and lunch, or any time not being used.
  • Turn off white boards when not being used for period of time.
  • Turn computers off every night and weekend.
  • Open windows and doors instead of using fans.
  • Turn the air conditioners off when leaving for the day.

Each class has one or two ‘energy monitors’ to help make sure these things happen and we reduce our carbon foot print by making sure lights and computers are off.
